Activists Are Up in Arms

In Louisiana activists are up in arms about human cloning, and want to see a total ban placed on this scientific research technology. On the other hand, supporters of this line of research, those that believe that the potential for developing cures for tragic and devastating illness, are attempting to rally public support for this technology. The disagreement is focused on the possibility of banning human cloning altogether in the state of Louisiana in legislation about to find its way on to the governor’s desk for approval or veto.

The legislation is powerful and draconian according to supporters of human embryonic stem cell research, siting the fact that the ban might criminalize those who sought research or medical treatment of this type in other states. “My husband and I can actually be charged as criminals if we seek treatment outside the state,” said Lisa Martin, mother of a diabetic child.

Those in favor of the ban on embryonic stem cell research say that this claim is unfounded and even ridiculous. “That’s like saying if I went to England and ate a hamburger I couldn’t come back home because I’d be importing British meat.”
Activists on both sides of this Louisiana struggle will soon be able to rest when SB 74 reaches the governor’s desk and he decides one way or the other.
